The Department of Planning and Development of Aalborg University, which acommodates the Confucius Institute of Innovation and Learning, also includes two research units of Geoinformatics and Land Management. The research and teaching of the two units relates to the National Survey and Cadastre, the Danish Association of Chartered Surveyors, and Geoforum Denmark, among other occupational branches.

A ph.d.-project, performed by ph.d.-fellow Karin Haldrup, investigates relations among cadastre, land registration, and housing finance. Real assets serving as collateral for housing finance have become part of the global economy, which calls for a renewed focus on the economic functions of real property infrastructure. Research interests include the role of land administration systems for the functioning of the land market and the interrelations with urban development.  The project is co-financed by VP SECURITIES A/S.

Professor emeritus in Land Registration/ Cadastre, Erik Stubkjær, among other research, reflected on the century-long institutionalization of property rights in Denmark. The context of the research was initiated by Barry Smith, professor of Philosophy at State University of New York at Buffalo. The investigation, accumulated in a book, brought together Hernando De Soto's approach to capitalization and  John Searle's contribution to the ontology of social reality. Other recent publications include Cadastre and Economic Development, 2009.

I am not one who was born in the possession of knowledge;
I am one who is fond of antiquity, and earnest in seeking it there.
